How do I know when my pointe shoes are ‘dead’?

Here are a few key signs that your pointe shoes might no longer be supporting you the way they should. If you’re experiencing any of these, it might be time to book an appointment.

Platform – What once felt like light pressure may now feel like you’re standing directly on the floor. This is often accompanied by discomfort or pain.

Shank – When the shank dies, you’ll lose that crucial feeling of support. The foot may start to look oddly shaped (hello, cashew foot), and the lack of structure can place extra stress on your ligaments and tendons.

Has your foot started to resemble a cashew nut?

Box/Wings –
If the wings are too soft, they stop lifting and supporting you. You’ll begin to sink or slide in the shoe, which can lead to joints and knuckles popping out making it much harder to control your movement.

Other signs to watch for:

• You feel like you’re being pulled off your platform instead of staying up and over.

• Movements that once felt secure now feel unstable or laboured.

• You’re working harder for less result.

Still unsure? Bring them in.

We’re always happy to assess your shoes and help you understand if they’re still suitable or if it’s time to level up to something with more support.
